The default "port" that
used for hosting a website (including Remote VirtualBoss)
is port 80. Some Internet service providers will
block this port in an attempt to convince you to
upgrade to a more expensive Internet connection.
If your ISP happens to block port 80 and you want
to be able to access Remote VirtualBoss from the
Internet, you can either upgrade your account with
your ISP, or you can configure your computer to
use another port. Changing ports is explained below.
If you have a
Pro or Enterprise
Support Plan,
contact our service department and we can change
your ports and fully set up Remote VirtualBoss for
you. A Pro Support Plan is less expensive than upgrading
your Internet connection, and it includes additional
services.
If port 80 happens to be blocked,
we recommend you configure your computer to use
port 90. This is the standard port we use if port
80 is blocked. It does not conflict with other services,
and we have not found any ISPs that block this port.
If you need to configure your computer to use
port 90, follow the 4 steps below:#1 - Change
the port being used by your web server software
By default, your web server software is set up
to use port 80. You will need to configure the software
if you need to use port 90.
#2 - Make sure your firewall allows activity
on port 90
If you use the built-in Windows Firewall or a
third-party firewall, you'll need to configure it
to allow port 90 activity.
#3 - Make your
domain name include or redirect to port 90
You have one of two options to allow your domain
(website) to use port 90:
- You can indicate the port to use by adding
a :90 to the end of the web address you type
into your browser. If your web address is
http://demo.remotevb.com,
and you configured your computer to use port
90, you would type in
http://demo.remotevb.com:90
as the address when you want to access Remote
VirtualBoss.
- Optionally, you can use a redirection service
from a dynamic IP service like
www.no-ip.com.
They will automatically redirect your domain
to use port 90, without any change to your original
web address. If you have a
Pro or
Enterprise Support Plan, we provide this
service for free, including full support.
#4 - Configure your router to forward port
90 activity
It is necessary to configure your router to direct
port 90 activity to your computer (click
here to learn more about this).
