Remote VirtualBoss Troubleshooting

If you have issues making Remote VirtualBoss work, it's best to go through these 3 troubleshooting steps to test the problem you are having.

Test #1 - Is Remote VirtualBoss viewable on the computer that is acting as the Remote VirtualBoss server?
From the computer that is acting as the server, click this link: http://localhost. You should see the Remote VirtualBoss login window or a Remote VirtualBoss screen. If you see a Remote VirtualBoss window, move on to Test #2 below. If you cannot see Remote VirtualBoss on the computer that is acting as the server, see that the following things are done:
  • Make sure the Remote VirtualBoss program is installed and running.
  • Make sure your web server application is installed and running.

Until you can pass this test, you should not move on to further tests. If Remote VirtualBoss is not working on the actual computer that is acting as the server, it is not going to work anywhere, for anybody.

Test #2
- Is Remote VirtualBoss viewable through other computers on your local network?
If you have multiple computers on a local network, you can test to see if Remote VirtualBoss will run over your local network.

Using a computer on your local network, enter the address http://xxx.xxx.x.xxx into your web browser (where xxx.xxx.x.xxx = the IP address of the computer that is acting as the Remote VirtualBoss server) to see Remote VirtualBoss. For example, if the Remote VirtualBoss computer's IP address is 192.168.0.102, enter this into a web browser on another PC in your office (click here to see how you can determine the IP address of a computer).

If Remote VirtualBoss is not viewable on other computers within your local network, it is likely that it will not be available to users outside of your local network (i.e., users on the Internet). If Remote VirtualBoss is visible from other computers on your network, proceed to Test #3 below.

  • If you cannot view Remote VirtualBoss from another PC on your local network, check and make sure that port 80 is not blocked by your firewall. If you have changed your port number from port 80 (the default port), make sure the port you are using is not blocked by your firewall.
Test #3 - Is Remote VirtualBoss viewable from a PC anywhere on the Internet / on the outside of your office?
This is the final test. If you pass this test, everything is ready to go.

Once you have set up a domain name that points to your computer, visit it by entering the address into your web browser (you may need to include http:// at the beginning of the domain name; example: http://demo.remotevb.com). You will see a Remote VirtualBoss website if everything has been set up correctly.

  • Another way of doing this test (if your domain is not set up yet) is to go directly to the outside IP address of your Internet connection. You can easily determine your outside IP address by visiting www.whatismyip.com. If your IP address is 68.21.75.107, you would access it by using your web browser and typing 68.21.75.107 in your web browser address bar. This will also take you to the Remote VirtualBoss website.

If you are unable to pass this test, first make sure that you've passed Test #1 and #2 above. If you have passed Test #1 and #2, here are some possible causes of Test #3 failing:

A. Your firewall is blocking the activity (click here to learn about firewalls).

B. Your router is not forwarding HTTP requests to your PC. You need to set up your router to do this (click here to see the recommended steps).

C. Your Internet service provider is blocking port 80. Some cable and DSL ISPs block port 80. You can determine if port 80 is blocked by checking it at www.canyouseeme.org. If your router is configured properly and the port 80 test fails, it is likely that your ISP is blocking port 80. If your ISP blocks this port, you need to change it (click here to see the recommended steps to change to a different port).

D. Your router will not allow you to make a trip out to the Internet and back to a server on your local network. Some routers will not allow you to access your Remote VirtualBoss website from inside the network. For example, if Remote VirtualBoss is running on a computer on your local network, and you have set up a web address (like http://demo.remotevb.com) that points to the computer that is acting as your Remote VirtualBoss server, you may not be able to go to this domain from within your local network. In this case, you would be going outside of your network (out to the Internet) and then back into your local network again. Some routers will not let this happen. If your router will not allow you to do this, you can still use Remote VirtualBoss from any computer in your network by going to http://xxx.xxx.x.xxx (where xxx.xxx.x.xxx = the local IP address of the computer that is acting as the Remote VirtualBoss server; see Test #2). This is not a major issue, because Remote VirtualBoss will still operate normally for users outside of your network.

E. Your Internet connection uses a static IP and your router requires this to be entered into its configuration. In this case, contact your ISP for the IP information you need to enter into your router.
